The Rev. Dr. Elwood Stokes was the first President of the Ocean Grove Camp Meeting Association, a post he held from 1869 until his death in 1897. He was the principal planner of Ocean Grove, founded the first fire company, and was responsible for Ocean Grove having the most modern water and sewer systems in New Jersey. He was also a published poet. The statue in front of the Great Auditorium was dedicated in 1905.
